How do I use my Omega Speedmaster watch? This may seem like second nature to a lot of us. However, recently it seems that quite a few of my customers do not have any knowledge about how to operate a manual wind, automatic or even a quartz watch. It appears that unless the watch has a touch screen these customers are at a loss. To no fault of their own, they simply have never owned a watch and if they have it has been a smart watch.

I actually had a customer who recently purchased an Omega Speedmaster Triple date and loved the watch, but had some questions about why it was not working properly. Granted, the Omega Speedmaster triple date is one of the more complicated watches to set, but the customer did not realize that first you had to actually wind the watch to power it up before wearing. He also wondered why the luminous material did not glow on demand and forever. He thought maybe the battery was dead and that was why the watch did not run or why the luminous material was not glowing. At first I thought he was joking, but came to realize, he simply had no idea of how to operate an automatic watch or for that matter did not know what an automatic watch is.

I was at a loss on how to approach the customer and had to step back and try to put myself in his shoes. Operating a watch is simply second nature to me and I had to figure out a way to explain to the customer how to operate his watch in layman’s terms.

Omega Speedmaster Manual Wind with Labels

The best way to start was to get down to the very basics. There are 3 types of watches. Manual wind, Automatic and quartz. A manual wind watch simply means you have to wind the watch on a daily basis to keep the watch running and functioning properly. An automatic watch will wind itself while the person is wearing the watch, but initially has to be wound before wearing. Finally, a quartz watch is powered by a battery and therefore does not need to be wound.

The next step is how to set the time on your Omega speedmaster or Omega watch. On almost all Omega watches, setting the time is done through use of the crown. Click here for the video manuals that Omega has available. I am not going to go into a full explanation on how to set time and different functions for every Omega watch. The video manuals are a good start and for the most part explain how different types of Omega watches work and how to set them properly. Click here for a pdf file of the current Omega Users Manual.
To use the Pdf users manual, simply look up the movement your watch has and follow the appropriate instructions. If you are still unsure about what movement your watch has or somewhat intimidated about the whole process, please give TamboWatches a call. We would be happy to walk you through all the different functions of your Omega Speedmaster or Omega watch.
